Fraser Fest

We went down to Fraser Fest at the wharf in New Westminster (next to the Quay). People setup stands along the boardwalk selling stuff they made, hoping that it is, in fact, what people who walk along boardwalks want to buy. There were actually a lot of public service announcement type things there (Power Smart, Recycle). Here is Matthew at the BC Ferries booth making a pirate ferry.

The highlight of the day is the tugboat parade. It was delayed because some of the tugs were busy turning this ship around. You would think they could just back out.

They had tugs of all shapes and sizes in the parade. This one went by sideways. I guess that is an important ability for a tug, just like horses.

These two tugs were fighting by pushing against each other. This is what they call a tug-of-war.

Here is a view looking up the river toward the Pattullo Bridge, the Riverboat Casino, a Paddlewheeler docked off the far left of the frame, a Paddlewheeler in the center for river tours, and a police boat keeping an eye open just in case the paddlewheelers get out of control. That many paddlewheelers in one location and things are bound to heat up. They get really steamed. I wonder what the fascination is with taking trips on vehicles that are so difficult to steer? Is that only limited to paddlewheelers and trains? Think how much more popular planes would be with one less rudder.
