Kiyo's Birthday

Matthew and I went to Galiano for my brother Kiyo's birthday. Jocelyn was in Las Vegas and missed the party. It seemed like half of the island was there celebrating... the fun half.

I'm sure they have parties like that ever weekend, but to us city folk it was wild. A bit of rain, a lot of mud, a lot of music, and a lot of drinking.

Kiyo naturally pulled out the Xaphoon (rhymes with Baboon ;-) to join in with the music making.

My cousin Dale and (my half brother's half sister would naturally be my...) "quarter" sister Karima came to the island to celebrate. My parents came for the party too. I can't speak for everyone else, but we all had a great time.

After the first night the weather cleared up and was great all weekend.

Dale brought a potato gun as a gift for Kiyo and couldn't wait to show it off. Combine a potato, some PVC, foot spray, and a spark . Mix in a bit of testosterone and you have hours of fun. I'm not sure about local regulations so let's just say that we couldn't get it to work and it does not shoot potatoes hundreds of meters in the air.

Do not get in the way of a spud gun. This is what might have happened if we ever got it to work.

Each evening was a new party - or perhaps it was just a continuation from the night before. Even King Kiyo of Tequila-Ville graced us with his presence in the pump house.

On Saturday, Tika, Matthew and I took an old crab trap down to the dock to try our luck. I had no luck a week earlier in North Van but I wasn't going to let my fishing license go to waste.

We caught not one, but two rock crab for dinner that night.
Note to Annie: We put the fish head back in the freezer - do not use for soup.

Kiyo started construction of a tarp roof to be erected for the party. There were some technical difficulties and it was a few days late (Oh yes, there were endless jokes about his lack of erection). The tarp roof was almost up when Matthew and I went home and is hopefully still there when we go back.

Matthew didn't want to leave the island. That was the longest we had ever been on Galiano in one stretch and it was a quite excellent weekend.
