Day 4 in New Zealand
Day 2 on our trip north and Jocelyn, Matthew, and I went off on our own back to Paihia to check out the sights. We took a small ferry across the bay to Russell for lunch and took a boat trip through the Bay of Islands to "Hole in the rock", a rocky island with a cave running right through the middle of it. The weather was too rough to go right through, but they backed the boat right in. As you can see from one of the pictures, the "hole" isn't much larger than the boat. There are a few pods of dolphins in the bay that the boats regularly harrass and this day was no exception. Our boat was licenced to get right up close to them and they swam with us for some time. Even as the boat was leaving at full speed the dolphins had no problem keeping up.
Below is what I could hack together from a GPS travelogue created by the WWMX travelogue tool. The location of each photo is calculated from the GPS track log and the photo time stamp. It took seconds to generate and hours to figure out how to post it to the blog while keeping it interactive.
